HP Envy 13: a lightweight notebook PC with a good price-performance ratio

HP Envy 13: a lightweight notebook PC with a good price-performance ratio

HP Envy PCs come in several configurations, the 13-inch 13-aq0007nf model tested today can adapt to most uses even in mobility situations thanks to a modest weight and a good autonomy.

For those looking for a space-saving laptop models with a screen size of between 12 and 14 inches are probably the best choice. HP has offered to discover this model Envy 13 with a screen of 13.3 inches, a rather fine design and a weight that is quite suitable for this type of use.

When unpacking no big surprise, only an accessory is offered: the charger. The main block is a fairly modest size, which is a good point, especially since the total length of the cable is quite long: 2,70m, which will do without extensions in a lot of situations.

A quick tour of the owner to inspect the back of the PC shows that no hatch to change the hard drive or RAM is provided. It will probably be necessary to go through the service box if the SSD or the battery is dead one of these days, or if we want to update them. The official page that leads to technical support and troubleshooting documents or manuals for this product does not work on the HP site, we will not know more.

The inspection of the PC is therefore badly engaged, the following offers better surprises. Still under the computer, on the sides, you can see two speakers. The ventilation grid which is located at the bottom will also have access to the open air thanks to the hinge which will come slightly tilt the base of the PC, enough to let the air circulate.

On the left side there is a jack, which is also input for a microphone, a USB-A 3.1 port and a USB-C (5 Gb / s). No HDMI output but the USB-C output can also be used as DisplayPort and possibly to power the computer.

On the other side the supplied power supply is located at the end, next to a second USB 3.1 Type A plug and a MicroSD card reader. Finally, we appreciate the presence of a lock button on the camera that displays a logo on the screen when it is on or off. The more cautious would prefer a manual cache mechanism, they still have the chatterton option.

We appreciate the presence of a fingerprint reader on the lower right corner of the keyboard. Configured with Windows Hello it was very responsive, as much as those found on our smartphones, which allows to unlock its Windows 10 Family session instantly. Once you've tasted it, it's hard to do without it.

The keyboard is nice to use just like the touchpad that does not materialize the click buttons even if they are present. It is quite responsive and allows scrolling a page with two fingers to move vertically or to zoom on a page.

The main speaker is located just above the keyboard, it is assisted by the two auxiliaries on the sides of the PC and delivers a great sound for a laptop, which is not always the case. This one is powerful enough for any film and the volume can be pushed to its maximum while keeping a clear sound to listen to the music.

The 13-inch IPS 1920x1080 pixel full HD screen is very bright when off, giving a rather pleasant style if you do not let your fingers wander on the screen. He is fortunately non-tactile. The problem is that it is also brilliant when it is turned on, despite a good level of backlighting. The use in full sun or in bright environments is therefore quite difficult and will remain even embarrassing under normal indoor conditions for the most picky, despite a good level of brightness. The colors on the screen are however flattering.

Inside the HP Envy 13-aq0007nf incorporates an Intel Core i5-8265U processor supported by an Intel UHD 620 GPU, 8 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD. Widely enough to run most consumer software. The use of Windows 10 is fluid, both at startup and in different tasks. Even with its size designed for mobility, the computer is not intended to be limited to surfing the internet, streaming or office but can be used to work on software greedy.

This power is felt on the battery life of course even if HP announced 11:30 of autonomy depending on the conditions of use. During a streaming test on Netflix with maximum brightness and sound at a third of power the battery was able to hold for 6:15, which is enough to view the first 8 episodes of Casa de papel. It is therefore likely that it reaches 8 to 10 hours of operation during tasks that require less processor and wireless connection.

When you first get started, the typical Windows 10 Family installation process is run. Adding self-promotion software is a common practice and HP is no exception. However, we regret the presence of a version of the MacAfee commercial antivirus limited to 30 days, which might suggest to novice users that they must get their hands on the wallet after this period. The best informed will use the default antivirus of Windows 10, pre-installed, free and well adapted.

    Against competition

This model can be compared to several other equivalents in other brands that are sold at substantially the same price. The toughest competitor is the Dell XPS 13 which made very good impression on many points in our test. The other is the Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 that can be found even at a lower price.

Both offer an equivalent configuration at processor and memory level and the same screen size. Only a little lower storage could tip the balance in favor of HP. For the rest, the reading of the test and a study of the characteristics or the preferences level design will be necessary to make your choice.
