In its 15-inch version, the new Surface Laptop 3 offers solid performance and a pleasant design that make it a good ultraportable everyday.

If we loved the 13-inch Laptop Surface when it was released two years ago, a lot has changed since then in the high-end ultraportable segment. Now, this model is no longer as different from the mass and it is the same for his new big brother in 15 inches. At first glance, we also have a little trouble knowing he is speaking.

Compared to the rest of its many competitors, it is not particularly light, fast or very complete. It is also not cheap or technologically advanced and its autonomy is not exceptional. But it is relatively light, fast enough, stylish, partially scalable and backward compatible with older power supplies. We can therefore deduce that it is aimed at a corporate clientele.

Its recommended retail price starts at 1.349 euros, with only 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of SSD. Windows 10 already takes 20 GB, and Microsoft Office will take another 6 GB. You really can not do anything heavy on this configuration except maybe cloud applications, and even there, it's barely enough memory to hold Windows and a lot of browser tabs.

Our test model with 16GB Ram and 256GB SSD is the minimum configuration we recommend and even this storage is only sufficient if you do not save a lot of files locally or if you do not download video to travel . And it is expensive paid compared to what the competition offers: the Lenovo Yoga C930 is smaller (14 inches) but higher in all other areas for much less expensive or the LG Gram 17, which has a slightly larger footprint (a 17-inch screen in a 15.6-inch chassis) but offers a lot more for an equivalent price.

The design is essentially the same as that of the Surface Laptop 3 in 13-inch version. There are two important differences compared to the Surface Laptop 2: a USB-C port on which you can connect an external monitor and easier disassembly so that the SSD can be upgraded (the memory is still soldered and the battery difficult to remove). It is also equipped with a metal wrist rest instead of Alcantara.

We still find the proprietary Magnetic Surface Connect port that is now compatible with fast charging. An additional USB-C port with the possibility of recharging would have been appreciated. Instead, one must be satisfied with a single USB-C and a single USB-A.

We realize that there is some space lost in this format 15 inches. The keyboard is the same as the 13-inch, but with larger gaps on the sides and the touchpad is the same size. The keys have a stroke of 1.3 mm, which is typical for its category. The keyboard is responsive but not very quiet.

The 3: 2 screen, which is a larger version of the 13-inch screen, offers a higher resolution to maintain the same pixel density at 201 dpi. Compared to many modern laptops in its price range, the display is just ok. Great for the job, but not bright enough for Netflix. There are two color profiles that come with it, a standard sRGB and an "Enhanced" mode, but the latter seems to be the native screen profile and just enhances the contrast.

Let's say it bluntly, we were disappointed. One of Microsoft's key arguments for this 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 is the presence for the first time of AMD mobile processors, the Ryzen 5 3580U Microsoft Surface Edition and the Ryzen 7 3780U Microsoft Surface Edition. These are two variants of other processors, the 3500U and 3700U, but with one more graphics core than their generic counterparts: 9 for the Ryzen 5 3580U and 11 for the Ryzen 7 3780U.

However, compared to the Surface Pro 7 with the Intel Core i5-1035G4, the Laptop Surface 3 is just not as fast on the typical workload it was designed to handle and the autonomy of the battery is just as disappointing. During our video streaming test, it reached 7.5 hours. And we fell around 5 hours when we pushed a little brightness without going to the maximum.
