Microsoft will abandon Cortana on iOS and Android

The Microsoft Voice Assistant could live his last hours on iOS and Android. Microsoft is on the verge of ending Cortana's mobile application.

Microsoft is on the verge of signing Cortana's death sentence on the iPhone and Android smartphones. The mobile application of the voice assistant could indeed disappear by January 31, 2020 from the App Store and Google Play.

The application, which was not officially available in France, could still be downloaded using a foreign account for iOS users, and installed directly by downloading the Cortana APK on Android smartphones.

The Redmond firm is also considering removing Cortana's integration of Microsoft Launcher, its Android application launcher.

An admission of failure in the face of competition

Microsoft has confirmed the abandonment of Cortana in the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Mexico, China, Spain, Canada and India. Only the United States could, it seems, continue to use Cortana, whose support will remain active past January 31. There is no indication, however, that the application will not be deleted later.

In the support notes posted on its site, Microsoft says it wants to make Cortana as efficient as possible by integrating it directly into Microsoft 365 productivity applications.

The abandonment of the application Cortana on iOS and Android sounds like a real admission of failure for Microsoft who no longer considered his assistant voice as a competitor of Google Assistant or Alexa.

Faced with these two giants, who largely dominate the market, the company of Satya Nadella intended, a few months ago, to focus on artificial intelligence to propose Cortana not just as a platform, but more like a service.
