    Twitter will show more ads in our timelines

    The social network is reviewing its advertising policy. Targeting is currently malfunctioning making ads less relevant.


    Twitter changes advertising strategy. After announcing mixed financial results on October 24, the social network has decided to change the display of advertisements in our timelines.

    In recent weeks, some users have complained that there are many more ads than usual in their feed. Others have raised targeting issues: some ads did not seem to fit their lifestyle at all.

    According to CNBC, a spokesman for Twitter said the increase in advertising load was due to a change in strategy: "Historically, users with a high number of followers saw fewer ads. Recently, we've changed our approach to showing ads to everyone using Twitter. As a result, some people will notice an increase in the number of ads displayed."

    Failing targeting

    As for targeting that no longer seems relevant, the problem is more complex. On October 8, 2019, Twitter announced that it had used "inadvertently" personal information that users had refused to share with third parties.

    These data included for example the brand of their phone, their operator, their operating system, Wi-Fi connectivity and whether the device is new or not. This may allow publishers to push their applications to those users who are more interested in installing them than others.

    Following this sharing bug, Twitter said it would no longer allow advertisers to target ads using certain information. However, corrective measures to fix this bug are not fully in place. The effects on targeting will therefore be felt until the end of the fourth quarter of 2019.
